Rooney and van Persie: the ultimate strike force?

23 October 2012 by

Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are two world class strikers who can turn the match on its head at any moment. A combination of the two up front seems to be perfect for a title challenge. The play making and assisting abilities of Wayne Rooney has seemed to have become greater as he has a world class finisher, Robin van Persie to feed. Both players were in form on the weekend in the 4-2 victory against Stoke City.

The two world class forwards combined well together creating a deadly strike force which would trouble most defences in world football today. Wayne Rooney got an early 27th birthday present as he netted a double and he scored his 200th goal for the club. Both Rooney and van Persie scored and provided assists as they ravaged Stoke’s defence in the second half. A menacing combination which was a sight to behold for United fans.

United dramatically came second in the 2011-12 Premier League after Manchester City secured a late winner against QPR on the final day of the season. In the summer of 2012 Sir Alex spent £24 million to sign 2011-12 Arsenal’s golden boot winner Robin van Persie as he felt he needed that spark in which Danny Welbeck and Chicarito were not providing. Wayne Rooney and Chicarito both had great seasons but this was not quite enough to win a 20th English league title.

Sir Alex started Rooney, van Persie and Welbeck on the weekend forming a 4-2-3-1 formation with Welbeck and Valencia on the wing, Rooney holding and van Persie up front. On paper this seemed odd, but the three strikers manoeuvred tremendously between positions. Van Persie seemed to be a left winger for a period of time while Welbeck was up front and Rooney played his traditional box to box forward role which did see him head in Stoke’s first goal. Rooney scored two, van Persie and Welbeck one.

Wayne Rooney was injured early on this season and this was the first match which saw the two forwards form a deadly partnership. Wayne Rooney has four assists so far this season and Robin van Persie has six goals. The season is still far from decided and if the two players continue this form they will be sure to lift another Premier League trophy. United next play Braga in the UEFA Champions League on Thursday.
