Nani wants to become the world’s best footballer

4 November 2010 by

Portuguese winger Luis Nani has stated his desire to become the best player in the world, signalling his intent to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford. Nani joined from Sporting Lisbon and initially failed to live up to expectations, but recently in his career at United is showing his true quality. Nani is still improving and his performances this season show that the young Portuguese may achieve what he desires. At the beginning of his United career in 2007, everyone was expecting him to be the new Cristiano Ronaldo, and this pressure on the young lad’s shoulders intensified when Ronaldo left for Real Madrid in 2009. However he failed to immediately replace the player at Old Trafford in the 2009/10 season, drawing some criticism for his performances. People were expecting him to slot straight into Ronaldo’s position, but failing to do so immediately was understandable, as playing up to the level of the World’s Best Player was an impossible task.

In his first season at United, that is 2007/08, Nani played 41 games and scored 4 goals, then scored 6 goals in 31 appearances in 2008/09, and 7 goals in 34 appearances in 2009/10. This season, he is playing a key role in United’s fight for success. He has already scored 5 goals in the first 14 games played this season. Unfortunately, he suffered a groin injury in the match against Bursaspor, but he will surely return with more determination than ever to continue where he left off. His goal is very clear in his mind: becoming one of the best players in the world. Under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson and making use of United’s state-of-the-art training facilities and world class coaches, Nani knows that he is at the right place to continue improving and achieving his goal.

His comments were:

“I want to be one of the best players. In the future, I want everyone to be saying Nani is one of the best players in the world. That is my ambition. Maybe some people are saying it now. If they are I am very happy. I have been working hard to be in this position. But I know I can also do much better and will keep going every day to get there.”

“I enjoy the pressure of being an important member of the side. When you have the ambition to be a top player you have to like the pressure as well. I am happy to take on that responsibility and am enjoying my football at the moment.”

“Since I came to Manchester I always said I believed in my qualities and my capabilities. Eventually I got my opportunities. I am more mature now and more experienced in the team. I am doing well now but I always felt I would get to this position. I always knew I could play well and be an important member of the team.”
