Man Utd signing 15 year old Mats Moller Daehli – Messi and Xavi combined!
Ferguson’s eye for talent continues to strengthen claims that he is the best football manager in the world. Rather than throwing away millions of pounds on ready-made players, United buy young players and help them develop into quality players. The latest acquisition for Manchester United is Norwegian player Mats Moller Daehli. He has been labelled by top worldwide scouts as a very gifted player and one of the best Norwegian talents to emerge from the country. He is only 15 years old, but United have already offered him a guarantee of a professional contract when he turns 17 years of age. Daehli was on trial with United on five occasions before the club decided to secure his services. He becomes United’s fourth Norwegian player, with the current three players being Eikrem, King and Hussain.
Daehli, which we will certainly hear about in the years to come as one of the best players in Europe, is renowned for his flair, skill, balance, and being a natural footballer who has football as part of his instinct. He was playing for Stabaek after joining from FC Lyn just 6 months ago. United have agreed to pay Stabaek 10000 Euro every season during Daehli’s entire football career, as well as contributing to the youth facilities of Stabaek and previous club FC Lyn. The network that Manchester United have in Norway and Reserve coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have certainly helped in securing this bright talent.

Daehli has been likened not only to Lionel Messi, not only to Xavi, but to Messi and Xavi combined. He is a special player and an amazing acquisition for Manchester United, which beat competition from Bayern Munich and Ajax for his signature. He will join his new teammates at Manchester United on the 1st February 2011, and United’s supporters will be keeping a close eye on his development at the academy. At United and under Ferguson’s guidance, Daehli can work hard to achieve his potential and become one of the best players in Europe.
His coach at Stabaek, Morten Tveit, when interviewed by football website Goal, gave these comments:
“He has not signed yet but he gave Manchester United the answer a couple of days ago and gave our club the news today. He goes into the Academy on 1 February. They wanted him as soon as possible but February was chosen because of his schooling. He will go back to Norway in May/June to finish his studies and return to United in July. He has in his contract that he will automatically get a professional contract when he is 17. That is unusual.”
“We have done our best to keep him and give him the best project here. But it has been talked about for a long time and I’m not that surprised. We are just happy to send such a good player as Mats to the best club in England. Had it been Leeds or Everton it would have been difficult. Man United is a professional, serious club. You have a lot of Norwegians there like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and we believe it is safe for him.”
“I think he is going to play for the first team and every coach at Man United thinks he will play for the first team. He is one of the best players in Europe in his age group. He is the best player I have ever seen at his age and I have seen a lot of international players at that age. He can play right side, left side, maybe off the main striker. He can be a little bit Messi, a little bit Xavi.”
“He is outstanding and can be a complete football player. He has the mentality, the technique, his attitude is very good. He has everything. If he misses something, it is the physical side. He has to be stronger. But he is 15 and that will come.”
“A lot of other clubs have tried to get him. Bayern Munich, Ajax and a number of Premier League clubs but he made up his mind a long time ago. You can’t go training with every club.”
“I have seen the other Norwegian players over there and they will not make it at Man United, that is my opinion. Mats is different.”
